Before giving legs to her latest CD and tapping its little bottom to send it out into the big world, Jayne Sachs let a few fans check it out.

"Sutures is stunning...the songs are on an emotional continuum we Jayne fans have come to expect...direct, honest lyrics wrap around vocals soft, beguiling and intimate."

"I mean WOW. Your album is incredible. I can't tell you how GREAT and AWESOME this sounds played LOUD"

It's called Sutures and is the fourth CD by Dayton singer/songwriter Jayne Sachs, recorded with her live group, the Jayne Sachs Band. Fans will delight in these 11 songs produced with respect for her edgy brand of alt pop/rock as well as for highlighting her engaging lyrics.

When Jayne started writing songs for Sutures in the spring of 04, it wasn't for the purpose of releasing another CD. She just "started writing" again after a few years of what she describes as writer's block.

"Writer's block doesn't mean the artist isn't writing...it just means the artist thinks everything he or she is writing sucks," Sachs explains.

Coming out of her dry spell, the first song she penned was "When It's Dark," which grew out of her intense fear she would never write or record again.

After playing the song for her band, and having a lot of long conversations on the phone with bass player and bandmate Scott Shiverdecker, Jayne started kicking out the tunes again as if writer's block had never squeezed on those insecurities.

And with all of these songs pouring out of her soul, releasing a CD seemed to be the next logical step.

But writing these songs had to be done around the schedules of her then 2-year old and 4-year old. Jayne had to steal moments every day to work on any given song, whether that meant working on lyrics and melodies while pushing both of her kids in swings at the park, or while she was in the car with the children or at the very end of the night after everyone else was asleep. Most of the songs were finished in her closet, where she retreats to practice late at night as to not wake anyone up. Yes, closet.

Doubling as Mom and recording artist has been a challenge for Jayne this time around, but the end result on both sides is good with Jayne in the middle chomping on Wheaties. Well, sucking down the coffee is more accurate.

Sutures was recorded with her live band, Steve Van Etten (electric guitar), Scott Shiverdecker (bass) and Kelly Morelock (drums and percussion) with Jayne on acoustic guitar and performing all vocals. It was recorded over ten months at The Toy Box in Nashville and produced by Lij, with whom Jayne co-produced her last record, Velveteen Girl, released late 2000.

"Lij is a demanding producer. He is incredible at seeing the big picture and how one track on any given song interacts with another. He's quick at knowing what he wants and will work with you until he gets it. I have experienced his fastidiousness before, but my bandmates were "Lij' virgins," Jayne says.

"It is not really possible to describe the pain of trying to follow the direction of an obviously brilliant musician as he spontaneously rearranges your ideas and asks you to track them…20 different ways." -- Steve Van Etten (electric guitars)

"Lij truly has a predetermined vision that none of us can see during the process, but comes out so magically and vividly at the end." -- Scott Shiverdecker (bass)

Jayne writes the songs, but all members bring a special creative energy to the project, which involves years of experience poured into the music. They've been together for almost a decade, which is quite a record for a local band. Jayne attributes their success in staying together to a mutual love and respect for each other, as well as the music.

The Jayne Sachs Band certainly has a recognizable sound, on CD and live. Their show has been called "dynamic," "full of passion and energy" and "a must see."
